“I knew you wouldn’t stay away… You have a few serious vices Zek’dyn; women, cards and duty…” Sam smirked “And I actually think they’re in that order…” Zek chuckled “I think that duty might be just a tiny bit ahead of cards, but it depends on the day.” Zek frowned at Sam’s reaction to the jibe about the condition of the chips “The last time I used it was just before the Bull Run was ambushed just after The Dominion War; haven’t touched it sense.” Zek nodded solemnly, understanding perfectly, and listened to the story of how he got the set.
"I guess that would also explain why he lets you get away with stuff." “No; it’s just that for some reason his talents are useful… I just ‘tolerate’ him because I need those talents… otherwise I’d have locked him up in my brig…” Zek chuckled “You’d have to catch me first, plus after smashing my PADD back at the academy, the one that had 2 years worth of homework on it… He owes me one.” Zek listened quietly while Sam explained to Sabina.
Collecting the cards up, Sam shuffled them again and looked at them “Basic Five Card Draw; always a good warm up.” He slid her over a ‘card’ that came with the deck. At the top, it had The Federation Flag and a picture of the USS Enterprise NCC 1701-E, as it was/is Starfleet’s Flagship; on it showed all the different ‘hands’ that one could get, from the Royal Fleet (Flush) down to the basic ‘high card’.
Samuel nodded as Sabina responded "That makes sense.", looking back at Zek, then back toward Sabina, Sam smiled, “If you need help understanding something, just ask; but be careful WHO you ask…” Zek rolled his eyes as Bear dealt out the cards, five face down, to the three of them. Zek picked up his cards carefully, putting on his ‘poker face’ worthy of a Vulcan, and looked at his cards, a pair of kings, a two, an ace, and a ten, he hung onto the kings and set down the other three. Sam handed out the new cards, then laid down his hand “Two Pair; 9’s over 4’s.” Zek followed “Three of a kind, kings” and looked to Sabina "I'm not sure what this is, but it looks good." She laid down an Ace of Clubs, a 2 of diamonds, a 3 of clubs and a 4 and 5 of diamonds. “Straight, very nice, beginners luck, but I believe she has it down.” Zek chuckled.
Zek looked over to the door as he heard someone enter. Nick their new helmsman that they acquired from the outpost on their last mission. He walked over "Mind if I join you?" Zek eyed him "That's up to these two card sharks, but everyone was invited. I'm not sure if they'll play nice, though." He chuckled, “No that would be Bob, he has the gills for it” then nodded at Nick “The more the merrier.” "We can play a betting round next, or I could watch you 3 play for a round or two until I get the hang of it..." Samuel shook his head, and handed out ‘50’ credits in chips to everyone at the table. “Alright there Doc…” Sam started shuffling, “5 bits to the pot,” and tossed in 5 chips, Zek mirrored his actions. “5 Card Draw, no wilds; everybody watch the Doc…” Zek noticed that Sabina looked confused, thinking it was about putting the initial 5 chips in he explained. “That is the ante, basically you have to pay to play, the next round of betting starts when you get your cards.” Zek resumed his poker stance as the last card fell in front of him. He picked them up and looked at them, and put another 5 into the pot. Then looked to Sabina again “If you like your hand you can call my bet by placing the same amount in that I did, you can also raise my bet, or you can fold. After everyone has bet/called/folded that’s when we exchange out our unwanted cards, then betting starts again.” Zek hoped that he explained it properly.
OOC Note: Yeah I hope I explained the betting right… I couldn’t remember so I had to wiki it… lol

"Oh... ok." She nods, less confused when Zek explains the betting. He adds 5 more to the pot. "I guess I'll keep going..." She puts another 5 in. Even though she's not as lucky as last round, she might have a good hand if other people's are bad.
(OOC- the idea I just had... if you don't have a deck of cards handy, deal a Solitare or other card game on your computer and use the first 5 of those cards.)

“You’d have to catch me first, plus after smashing my PADD back at the academy, the one that had 2 years worth of homework on it… He owes me one.” Samuel laughed “Was this before or after you almost killed me and countless others with that damned phaser?” he waited a moment “By the way, are you still banned from The Garden on the Academy? You did leave a nice ‘mark’ on a notable tree…”
Sam listened as the group continued to talk, and joke back and forth. He listened to Zek to make sure he was explaining the betting properly, something he had intended to do in another moment, but he figured he’d just chalk it up to Zek’s tunnel vision with regards to women, Sabina happened to be at a table with a bunch of guys, and was a women (not a bad looking one either, as far as Sam was concerned), which left Samuel always laughing at his friends reactions and different ‘face’ he put on. He never considered Zek a ‘player’ or the like, as he never mistreated them nor looked at them as objects; he just simply loved women… "Oh... ok." He nods as Sabina seems to be catching on quickly, which was good to see. "I guess I'll keep going..." Samuel hid his smile, as she’d have to learn to not be so obvious and readable when playing. But, this was about friendship and building a fellowship, not striping everyone of their money, property and dignity… however, winning was a plus. He watched Zek raise, and Nick and Sabina call his raise, Samuel then did the same. “Cards?” he asked everyone, and handed them out in turn, taking only one himself.

Colonel Grant asks for them to hand in their cards. She gives him the three she didn't want and gets three more to replace them. She takes a look at them and lays them down on the table. She's not sure what to expect from the others, but decides she'd be better off quitting before she dug herself into the proverbial hole too far. Her beginner's luck sure didn't last long.

Nick settled in at the table and listened to the banter, but not saying too much yet. He preferred to get a feel for people first off. Part of it was what he considered common courtesy, but most of it was really about learning to read people. Not just read people for the purpose of a game of poker, but to learn how to read them in daily life. Being in close quarters on a ship made it all the more important to know the people you were working with, depending upon. And even what you could get away with where they were considered. He always wanted to know how far was too far. And with each individual the line could greatly vary.
The Security Chief explained the betting to the good Doctor, "A lovely woman," Nick noted inwardly. Nick anted up and the Colonel dealt the first hand. He gave his hand a once over as Zek raised 5 bits. Sabina called his raise and even though he knew he would not likely win, he called as well. Sliding in two cards, he scooped up the two new ones to replace them.
Nick took a pull of his "beer" and listened to the banter between the Colonel and Captain Zek'dyn. Old Academy buddies... something he filed away in the back of his brain. Nick wasn't sure what to think of the Colonel yet, he was not what Nick expected of a CRV commanding officer. And even so, Nick suspected he would like working with him. People like Branson, stiff and unflexible were more likely to break in tight situations than someone of Grant's make. The real question was how the Colonel was going to like working with Nick. He never worried over it too much though, he knew he could prove his worth. Perhaps that was his own arrogance convincing him he could win over anyone though.
As it came around to him again, he decided against calling the current bet and put his cards face down on the table. With a grin he commented, "Sometimes the best move is a strategic retreat."

Sam laughed at Zek’s mention of the PADD “Was this before or after you almost killed me and countless others with that damned phaser?” he waited a moment “By the way, are you still banned from The Garden on the Academy? You did leave a nice ‘mark’ on a notable tree…” Zek chuckled “But it was a spider! Phaser fire is sometimes necessary for such unnatural creatures. And yes I’m still banned; I’ve never seen Boothby so angry…”
Both Sabina and Nick called his raise, Sam then did the same. “Cards?” he asked everyone, and handed them out in turn, taking only one himself. Zek placed two of his cards on the table, and scooped up the two new ones. Zek placed a 10 piece on the table, Sabina and Nick folded. Zek looked to Sam, gave him the ‘eagle stare’ while he waited for his friend to call/raise/fold.
Raise – Zek would call Fold – Zek would place his cards face down and take his winnings Call – Zek would lay down his hand to show he had 4 of a kind in 5’s and a 7 of hearts.
OOC Note: Thank you Sabina for helping with my hand :-D

Sabina leaves her cards 'folded' on the table. "My beginner's luck didn't even last a whole game," she comments with a slightly sad expression. She looks between Zek and the Colonel to see who would win between them. They had an interesting dynamic, she thinks to herself.

“But it was a spider! Phaser fire is sometimes necessary for such unnatural creatures. And yes I’m still banned; I’ve never seen Boothby so angry…” Samuel tried, but couldn’t hold back his laugh, and found himself remembering that day; it was a funny memory… save the fact that he almost got killed in the cross fire. “Okay, okay… calm down there…” he mockingly patted Zek on the shoulder, “Some Security Chief; I’ve seen you face down a squad of Jem’hdar, and a single 3 centimeter 8 legged creature pass across the room and that’s it…” he was still laughing, and had to rub his face to clear his tear filled eyes.
As the players adjusted, he heard their new crewmember say "Sometimes the best move is a strategic retreat." as he laid down his cards folding, Samuel gave him an odd look “I never liked that word; ‘retreat’. If anything, a strategic ‘withdraw’ should be used; always better tactically.” He smiled, nodded, and never looked at his fifth card. Seeing it was up to him and Zek, he called his friend and raised him another 10. Finding Zek calling his raise, he nodded, and laid his deck in a stack on the table, and began turning them over.
As he flipped the cards, they showed; 8 of hearts, 9 of hearts, 10 of hearts, jack of hearts… queen of clubs… Sam smiled, the old joy of cards brining him to ease. A straight was a damned good hand, but it didn’t take 4 of a kind; only three hands beat 4 of a kind. Shaking his head, he reshuffled the cards, put in a 5 credit ante, and dealt them again, after doing, he sipped at his drink.

“I never liked that word; ‘retreat’. If anything, a strategic ‘withdraw’ should be used; always better tactically.” the Colonel corrected Nick's choice of words. The helmsman gave a wink to Sabina and a small shrug as he responded with a breezy, "You say potato...anyway about it, I still fold."
He leaned back in his seat as the Colonel and Security Chief played the hand out. They were some nice looking hands for a first go round. Nick could tell he would have a fun and challenging time playing these two. The cards were shuffled and dealt again, Nick put in the ante and checked his hand over. Holding the cards up he looked over the top of them at the other players with a lopsided grin, "I was glad to hear there were some card players on the Cold Harbor. If there hadn't been, I might have had to ask for a transfer."

Sabina puts in her chip for the next round and recieves her cards. She was glad to see that the Colonel was relaxing- he tended to be tense. She takes a look at them and puts them back on the table facedown, copying what the 'card sharks' were doing. "So, this is just for chips, right? Cause I don't have any money to bet. And what happens when a person runs out of chips? Are there any other rules I need to know?"

Colonel Grant continued to watch the table around him, trying to get a feel for his opponents. He knew Zek, to well, from years of playing. Nick, was another story, and had a ‘rougness’ to him, that had rubbed Samuel the wrong way since he boarded, but was a good helmsmen; at least in the actual flying part of the position; he was a cunning player that had a lot of fight in him. Sabina, on the other hand, was new, naïve, eager and way to damn friendly; which always made Samuel laugh inside. Her threatening tactic was her complete innocence… beginners luck... He smiled inwardly again. "I was glad to hear there were some card players on the Cold Harbor. If there hadn't been, I might have had to ask for a transfer."
Samuel simply shook his head, as he organized his cards with a few smooth practiced movements; “Unlikely,” he replied before looking up from his car “I already tried to have you transferred, but even with my connections at Starfleet, not to mention my rank, I was denied; guess you’re stuck with each other Nick.” He smirked, then looked back at his cards.
With the hand over, everyone re-anted, he looked over at Sabina once he looked at his cards. "So, this is just for chips, right? Cause I don't have any money to bet. And what happens when a person runs out of chips?” Samuel nodded to her “Unless you’ve got some latnum that you wanted to beat with; that always makes things interesting. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing THAT until you’re much more comfortable and confident in the game.” A memory came rushing back to when he’d played a game against a Ferengi; to which he’d ran the card game to the end of betting, and beat the cheater. Oddly, they both had a two pair, Aces and Kings; yet Samuel beat him because he had a 6 kicker, the Ferengi had a 4… the memory almost caused him to bust out laughing, the look on the Ferengi’s face was priceless. “Are there any other rules I need to know?" Samuel smirked again, as he glanced from his cards to Sabina, “Probably.” he looked back at Beaks and held the grin.
The basics of Poker were simple; best hand wins. Betting was fairly simple as well, after a few hands it was easy to pick up. It was the intuition of the game that was impossible to teach. He tampered with his cards a bit, and laid them back down on the table, and looked back Sabina “The skills for the game come with practice, practice and more practice; the rules are easy, intuition is the 'crutch' and can’t be taught.” Smirking again, he tapped his five cards “Your move Doc.”

When her 'move' was prompted, she looked confused, then remembered she was supposed to put more chips in before getting new cards. So she puts another chip in and gives him two of her five, hoping she'll have a better hand this time or that they'll have nothing. "Well if poker intuition is anything like a doctor's intuition then I'll be better than you really soon." She smirks, hoping that to be the case. She was not the type of person who liked to be confused.

OOC Note:
Card game was concluded for the time being; can always restart that thread.
Corridor leading into the Mess Hall PX:
Colonel Grant rubbed his eyes as he walked, habitual PADD in one hand, an empty cup of CAFF in the other. His head ached, his yes were sore from over straining, and his muscles tried to beg and plead for him to rest; but true to form, if there was work needing doing, Samuel wouldn’t rest till it was done. Although a good mentality generally, being a commanding officer in this experimental branch of Starfleet; well, it was apparently hazardous to one’s health.
Removing his hand from his eyes, he entered the PX and nodded to multiple officers and crew that he passed by, smiling and shaking some hands; he wanted to always be an authority figure, but he strived hard to make his crew know that he didn’t just think of them as numbers and automatons. He walked up to the bar, and placed his cup on the counter. The crewmen behind the counter, didn’t even have to ask, he took the cup, filled it from behind the counter, and handed back to him; Samuel smiled back, and headed towards a table.
As he headed towards an empty table, noticed Doctor Jackson coming into the PX; “Ah, Doctor Jackson.” He said cordially “If you’re up for company, I think I can be ‘diplomatic’ for a few minutes.” He smile was friendly enough, but still held the air of ships Captain; something he was sure never went away no matter how hard he tried.
