-Phasers-
Siege Phaser Cannons
Twelve (12) banks of 2 Siege Phaser Cannons: Primary energy weapon system with five banks on the top and five banks on the bottom of the primary hull. The ship also has two banks on the top of the secondary hull. While this ship does not have mega-phasers, the large number of siege phasers is still very effective. The weapons damage is about equal to laser cannons used by the CAF but the Phasers have a greater rate of fire. The phasers are also slightly shorter ranged but only slightly. Both Phaser Cannons in each bank can be linked or can be fired separately. They cannot be used faster than the speed of light. Weapons system has half the normal penalties to hit fighters and small targets. Several ships of the Excelsior-class have had their phasers rebuilt to increase their firepower and range.
Range: 12,437 miles (20,000 km) in space and 12.4 miles (20 km) in an atmosphere. Rebuilt phasers have a range of 15,550 miles (25,000 km) in space and 15.6 miles (25 km) in an atmosphere.
Mega Damage: 2D4x100 each or 4D4x100 for both cannons in a bank. Rebuilt phasers do 2D6x100 each or 4D6x100 for both cannons in a bank.
Rate of fire: Maximum of Three (3) times per melee each cannon.
Payload: Effectively Unlimited.
Primary purpose: Assault
Secondary purpose: Defense/anti-spacecraft/anti-fighter
- Torpedo launchers -
Arrangement: Two fixed-focus torpedo launchers, located just above the main deflector dish in the neck of the vessel. A third launcher is set to fire dead aft and is located on the rear of the engineering hull just below the aft shuttlebay. These launchers are the second generation of automated, high-speed launcher originally found on the Constitution-Refit Class starships. Since the launch of the Excelsior Class, however, the vessel has had continuous upgrades to keep the vessel up to date with modern Torpedo Weapon technology. The last upgrade for the Excelsior Class saw the installation of torpedo launchers designed and deployed for use with the Akira class. These launchers are highly automated and can fire a maximum salvo of 5 torpedoes per launcher from the forward launchers and 3 torpedoes from the aft launcher. Upgrade - 4 x Pulse fire quantum torpedo tube39 with 150 rounds.
Type: Mark XXV photon torpedo, capable of pattern firing (sierra, etc.) as well as independent launch. Independent targeting once launched from the ship, detonation on contact unless otherwise directed by the Chief Tactical Officer.
Range: Maximum effective range is 3,000,000 kilometers.
Primary purpose: Assault
Secondary purpose: Anti-spacecraft
-Deflector shields-
Type: A symmetrical subspace graviton field. This type of shield is fairly similar to those of most other Starships. However, besides incorporating the now mandatory nutation shift in frequency, the shields alter their graviton polarity to better deal with more powerful weapons, such as the neutron-carbide beams of Tamarian vessels. During combat, the shield sends data on what type of weapon is being used on it, and what frequency and phase the weapon uses. Once this is analyzed by the tactical officer, the shield can be configured to have the same frequency as the incoming weapon - but different nutation. This tactic dramatically increases shield efficiency.
Output: There are twelve shield grids on the Excelsior Class starship, and each one generates 137.5 MW, resulting in a total shield strength of approx. 1650 MW. The power for the shields is taken directly from the warp engines and impulse fusion generators. If desired, the shields can be augmented by power from the impulse power plants. The shields are now comparable to the original New Orleans class and can protect against approximately 12% of the total EM spectrum (whereas the Galaxy Class Starship's standard shields can protect against about 23%), This improvement was made possible by the multi-phase graviton polarity flux technology incorporated into the shields, which is now standard issue on Federation starships.
Range: The shields, when raised, stay extremely close to the hull to conserve energy - average range is ten meters away from the hull.
Primary purpose: Defense from enemy threat forces, hazardous radiation and micro-meteoroid particles.
Secondary purpose: Ramming threat vehicles.
-Ablative armor-
Ablative armour was originally developed for the USS Defiant1; the Borg had proven their ability to penetrate Federation shields with ease during their encounter with the Enterprise at system J-252, and the Defiant designers wanted the ship to have a degree of protection even if the shields should be overcome in the expected future encounters.3
The value of the armour was proven when the Defiant came up against Dominion forces. Like the Borg, the Dominion were able to penetrate Federation shielding systems relatively easily in the first years of hostility between the two powers4, and the Defiant's ablative armour allowed the ship to withstand attacks that would have otherwise caused significant damage.5
Recently there has been a massive revolution in this technology with the appearance of the ablative armour generator. This device was given to the crew of the USS Voyager by a future version of Admiral Janeway, who travelled back in time to the ship in order to assist them in returning home from the Delta Quadrant. The generator involves a series of devices placed onto the hull of a vessel; when activated these replicate a layer of armour over the surface of the ship. The effectiveness of armour is considerable. The system Voyager employed was able to withstand a simultaneous attack by several Borg cubes. One of the most useful features of this system is that as it can be materialised and dematerialised as needed, even weapons systems can be covered over when they are not actually in use. This gives a much greater degree of coverage than any standard armour protection which must leave permanent apetures to operate such systems through.6
At time of writing Starfleet had had relatively little time to ascertain this technology, but it was simple to adapt it for use on Voyager without spacedock or any outside support6, indicating that it should be reasonably easy for the remainder of Starfleet's ships to create ablative armour generators for themselves. This should multiply the hull strength of the fleet massively at a single stroke.
